Anticipatory Anxiety
You live in what hasn't happened yet. This is the work of coming back to the present, when your body is already bracing for a future that may never arrive.
The event is days away and you're already there, running it, rehearsing the versions where it goes wrong. Your body doesn't know the difference between the thing and the thought of the thing, so it responds now, fully, to something that hasn't happened and might not. The waiting is its own kind of suffering, often worse than the event turns out to be, and it robs you of the days in between, which you spend somewhere in the future instead of here. By the time the moment arrives, you've already lived it a hundred times.
You're not being dramatic, and you can't just tell yourself to relax. The bracing is automatic. This is about changing what happens in the waiting.
What’s actually happening
Anticipatory anxiety is your nervous system trying to protect you by preparing, running the threat in advance so you won't be caught off guard. The intention is protective; the cost is that you pay for the event many times over, and you lose the present to a future that is still only imagined. Since the body responds to the rehearsal as if it were real, more rehearsing doesn't reduce the threat; it deepens the groove. The work is to interrupt the rehearsal, to teach your system that it doesn't have to pre-live the thing to survive it, so the waiting stops being a second, longer version of the event.
The Waiting Kit
This is the guided intervention for anticipatory anxiety. It works with the exact experience of living in what hasn't happened yet, and gives you a way back to the present while the waiting is still going on. Includes a private audio walkthrough recorded by Lisa.
The next step
The kit this one connects to is The Signal Kit, the baseline mechanism underneath all your worry, including the waiting.
The Downloadable Care Guide
This is a practical visual companion that reinforces the work and keeps the practices within reach in everyday life. It's an instant download from craftyourwellness.com.
