Emotional Numbness

Something inside you feels dead, and the color has drained out of the days. This is the room for numbness as survival, and for the capacity to revive that was never actually lost.

It isn't sadness, exactly. Sadness would at least be a feeling. This is flatter than that, a grey where color used to be, a distance between you and your own life. Food, music, people you love, things that used to move you now land at arm's length, muffled. Unable to point to a reason, you turn on yourself: you decide you're broken, or cold, or lazy, that other people manage and you just aren't trying hard enough. That verdict adds a second weight on top of the numbness, and it's wrong.

Numbness is not the absence of a working self. It's a working self that turned the volume all the way down because the sound was too much to bear. Which means the capacity to feel didn't leave. It's dormant, and dormant is not dead.

What’s actually happening

When feeling becomes overwhelming, unbearable, or unsafe, the mind can turn it down as a protection, the way a breaker trips to keep a circuit from burning out. The relief is real, and so is the cost: the same switch that dims the pain dims everything, so joy and color go quiet along with the hurt. This is survival, not brokenness, and it explains why forcing yourself to feel or shaming yourself for not feeling never works; you're fighting a protection that's doing its job. The resurrection plant looks utterly dead through a dry season and greens within hours of water, because the life was never gone, only waiting. The work here is the same: to understand the numbness as protection, to stop punishing yourself for it, and to let feeling return gradually and safely, so the system trusts that the volume can come back up.
