Private Grief

You keep it together in front of everyone and fall apart only when no one is watching. This is the room for the grief that only opens in the dark.

All day you function. You answer the emails, you show up, you ask how other people are doing, and you mean it. Then the door closes, or the lights go off, and it arrives, the whole of it, the crying you wouldn't do in daylight. You've become good at the composed face, so good that people think you're doing well, and part of you isn't even sure you're allowed to be seen falling apart, so you make sure you never are. It's lonely in a specific way, grieving in a room by yourself while the world thinks you've moved on.

There's nothing wrong with you for grieving in private, and you don't have to perform your sorrow to make it real. This room is about being less alone inside it, and about letting the grief have more than the night shift.

What’s actually happening

Composing yourself all day and coming apart alone is often what a person does when they've learned that their grief is too much for others, or that falling apart isn't safe or permitted. The sorrow then gets scheduled into the only hours that feel private, and it runs at full force there because it had to be held back everywhere else. The daytime composure isn't fake; it's protective. The cost is that grief meant to be shared gets carried in isolation, which makes it heavier and slower to move. The work here is gentle: to loosen the sense that your grief is a burden or a secret, to let it exist in more of your life than the dark, and to find, at your own pace, the witness that grief needs to soften.
