Taking Up Space
You make yourself smaller without deciding to. This is the work of seeing where the rules came from, and taking up the room that's actually yours.
You read the room and adjust yourself to fit it before anyone asks you to. You downplay a win so no one feels smaller. You have an opinion and hold it, a need and don't name it, a preference and defer it. You apologize for things that aren't yours to apologize for, including the amount of space you take up just by being present. From the outside it looks like being easy to get along with. From the inside it's a constant, quiet management of yourself so that you stay acceptable, and you're tired of it in a way you can't always explain.
None of this is a personality flaw, and it isn't something to fix by force. It's a set of rules about who you're allowed to be, most of them installed young and never spoken out loud. You can't renegotiate a rule you can't see. This room is about making those rules visible, so you can decide which ones you still want to live by.
What’s actually happening
Making yourself small is usually obedience to rules nobody ever said out loud. In a first home where love, peace, or safety depended on your being agreeable, undemanding, or invisible, you learned that shrinking was how you stayed connected, and that reflex is still running now, in rooms where the old rules no longer apply. The family court that set those rules doesn't need to be present anymore, because you carry it inside and it still hands down verdicts. Taking up space isn't about becoming louder or more demanding. It's about seeing the inherited rule for what it is, an old survival strategy rather than a law of nature, and giving yourself permission the court never did.
